Smartphone makers on hunt for Android alternatives

Monday, 3 September 2012

Smartphone makers are reportedly looking for alternative to Android operating system post the much-hyped Samsung-Apple ruling.

To rewind: The tech giant Apple initiated the battle in mid-April, 2011 when it accused Samsung for infringing on its intellectual property. After almost a year of scorched-earth litigation, a San Jose, California based jury has reached to a verdict last week that Samsung ripped off Apple’s innovative technology. Samsung, which is using Android primarily for designing its handsets, will now have to pay around $1.049 billion in damages to Apple.

However, it is found, Android is on the top of the league with users presently, which is used in about two thirds of smartphones.

Market watchers added, the latest ruling is also likely to hit smaller vendors that use Android OS in their devices including HTC, Motorola, Sony, ZTE and Lenovo.

Even, Samsung is shifting its focus from Android operating system. Last week, Samsung unveiled a new handset ATIV S powered with Microsoft’s Windows 8 operating platform at Europe's top consumer electronics show.

Well! How Android maker Google will tackle the situation in the best possible manner is yet to see. So, stay hooked.
