Samsung To Spend Billions On Austin-Based Mobile Chip Plant

Samsung said Tuesday it will invest nearly $4 billion dollars to expand and renovate its semiconductor manufacturing plant in Austin, Texas, marking the latest in a series of investments by the Korean tech giant to bolster its mobile chip offerings.

The remodeled facility is slated to start mass production during the second half of 2013, mainly producing 28-nm system-on-a-chip (SoC) solutions for tablets and smartphones. According to Samsung, the renovations are needed to better meet the "rapidly growing demands" of its OEM customers for mobile chip technology. "We are extremely pleased to extend our presence in Austin and reinforce Samsung's capacity for highly advanced logic products," said Woosung Han, president of Samsung Austin Semiconductor, in a statement. "The added ability in production will allow our customers to better respond to market needs."

Revamping the Austin facility is just one of many investments Samsung has made this year to grow its mobile chip business. In June, the company announced it was investing nearly $2 billion to build a new fabrication facility in Hwaseong, South Korea, also part of a larger effort to more efficiently meet customer demand for mobile chips.

In July, Samsung acquired the mobile connectivity and location division of U.K.-based chip-maker Cambridge Silicon Radio (CSR) in a $310 million deal, taking full ownership of all CSR operations related to the GPS and Bluetooth technologies it produces for smartphones. A total of 310 CSR employees and 21 mobile-related patents were acquired by Samsung.


Samsung's semiconductor unit currently produces mobile chips, including its flagship Exynos processors, for use in its own Galaxy line of smartphones and tablets. It also creates the processors used in Apple (NSDQ:AAPL)'s iPhone.

Samsung designs its chips based on the low-power architectures of U.K.-based chip licensor ARM, with their moderate power consumption levels being ideal for mobile devices. It recently introduced its newest chip, the dual-core Exynos 5 Dual, which can reach speeds up to 1.7GHz and is the world's first to use ARM's A-15 Dual Core mobile CPU.

Qualcomm and Texas Instruments (NYSE:TXN) are Samsung's biggest competitors in the mobile chip market, with x86-based chip-maker Intel (NSDQ:INTC) also attempting to nab some share with its Atom "Medfield" processors.

Lexmark To Lay Off 1,700, Exits Inkjet Business


Lexmark International plans to lay off 1,700 people and exit the inkjet printer business, part of a major restructuring for the Lexington, Ky.-based company.

The company said it will continue to service and support its existing inkjet customer base.

"Today's announcement represents difficult decisions, which are necessary to drive improved profitability and significant savings," said Paul Rooke, Lexmark chairman and CEO, in a statement. "Our investments are focused on higher-value imaging and software solutions, and we believe the synergies between imaging and the emerging software elements of our business will continue to drive growth across the organization."

The closing of the inkjet business includes the shutdown of a manufacturing plant in the Phillippines by the end of 2015. Among the 1,700 jobs being lost are about 1,100 manufacturing jobs, according to the company.

Lexmark said it expects to save about $85 million by the end of 2013 and reach $95 million in savings by 2015.

Lexmark has been one of the poorer-performing tech stocks of 2012. The company's shares are down more than 40 percent since the beginning of the year to $19.01.

Last fall, Lexmark executives said the company was transforming and focusing more on software integration, enterprise content management and business content management.

AMD Targets Servers, Virtualization With New FirePro GPUs


AMD (NYSE:AMD) unveiled this week its new FirePro S9000 and S7000 server GPUs aimed specifically at workstations and virtualized desktop environments.

What AMD is referring to as its most powerful dual- and single-slot server graphics cards to date, the new S9000 and S7000 are said to reduce server power consumption by up to 95 percent at idle, yielding overall data center cost savings and more efficient management for compute-intensive workloads, such as those demanded of computer-aided design (CAD) and media and entertainment apps.

AMD lifted the curtain on its new FirePro S-series GPUs at the VMworld 2012 conference in San Francisco, emphasizing the new chips' ability to more quickly and efficiently deploy virtualized desktops to client devices including smartphones and tablets. Both graphics cards include native support for virtualization technologies from Citrix (NSDQ:CTXS), Microsoft (NSDQ:MSFT) and VMware.

"More companies want to virtualize their IT ecosystem in order to do more with less while remaining responsive to the needs of their users," said David Cummings, senior director and general manager of Professional Graphics at AMD, in a statement. "With the arrival of the AMD FirePro S9000 and S7000 GPUs, we are responding to these needs by providing a seamless solution. Our server graphics not only provide an unrivaled feature set for data center customers, but blistering compute performance and outstanding power efficiency."

The $2,499 FirePro S900 delivers up to four teraflops of single precision compute performance, making it one of the highest-performing AMD graphics cards on the market to date. According to AMD, the S900 delivers server graphics up to 2.4 times faster than Nvidia's Tesla M2090 chips and up to 1.49 times the memory bandwidth.

The low-end S700 is selling for a more modest $1,249 and gets 2.4 teraflops of peak single-precision floating-point performance. It consumes about 150 watts of max power, compared to the S900's 225 watts.

The new FirePro S900 and S700 represent a recent and larger initiative on AMD's part to expand its reach into the server and virtualization markets. Earlier this year, the Sunnyvale, Calif.-based chip maker acquired microsever vendor SeaMicro in a $334 million deal, and also grew its Opteron family of low-power server chips with the launch of its new Opteron 3200 series in February.

Apple, Sony, Nike working on smart wrist devices



Cellphones have already entered into watches' turf as a time-telling tool. Now, the technology companies are also eyeing your wrist to strap it with a smart device. 

With the latest update, Sony has launched a new Smartwatch, a 2-inch-square display screen that can show emails, social media posts and other pieces of text. Sony’s smartwatch is power-packed with Google’s Android operating platform. Just like Apple’s iPod nano, it displays four apps at a time in a grid pattern. The most Users can get alerts about key events like an incoming call, text, messages and social feeds has 15 pre-installed apps and can store up to 255 applications.


Stephen Sneeden, Sony's product marketing manager has shared his views that the new smartwatch becomes a remote screen where users will have the ability to control phone with a number of different applications.

Device reviewers added,  the new wrist devices won't replace smartphones, but rather connect to them. It is expected that these devices will continue the basic task of telling the time, while eliminating the need to dig a smartphone out of your pocket or purse just to know time.

Besides Sony, companies like Apple and Nike, along with dozens of startups are also planning to strap a device on user’s wrist.

Dell hires HP's ex-exec Marius Haas to spur its global services


According to a latest update, the tech giant Dell Inc. has hired a former Hewlett-Packard Co Networking Chief, Marius Haas to further boost its global technology services market.

Haas was serving HP as the senior Vice President for company’s Networking Division since 2008. Before that, he served HP as Chief Strategy Officer and head of mergers and acquisitions for five years.

It is reportedly said that Marius Haas left the HP in 2011 and after that it hired Leo Apotheker as CEO in 2010. It is important to note that Haas has been an industry adviser with a private equity firm Kohlberg Kravis Roberts since that time.

Reliable insiders informed our team that Hass will replace Brad Anderson at Dell. Anderson is the President of enterprise solutions.

However, it is still unclear whether Anderson is leaving the company or not.

Both the private equity firm Kohlberg Kravis Roberts and Dell have declined to comment.

HP demonstrates LATEX Print Technology


HP has recently showcased the HP Designjet portfolio at the Media Expo held in New Delhi. At the Expo, HP demonstrated its Latex Technology with its series of flagship printers - HP Designjet L26500 and thermal inkjet technology with HP Designjet Z6200 with a view to familiarizing the print partners, brand managers and consumers with the eco-friendly technology and green credentials.

Aakash 2 to arrive soon


Minister of Human Resource Development and Minister of Communications & Information Technology of the Country. Kapil Sibal remarked,” An upgraded version of Aakash - the low cost tablet billed as the cheapest computer in the world for students and the teaching community, is set to be launched "very soon".”
He added, "It (the idea of low cost computer) was rejected throughout the world and it was said that India would not be able to make it. Our HRD ministry was committed to the Aakash project and ultimately we came out with the first version of the Aakash which costs Rs. 2,276. Now, Aakash-2 has been rolled out with battery life of three hours, 800MHz processor, providing internet access everywhere and it has a capacitive screen. The process to distribute this device has begun and it would be formally launched very soon.”
"That was the dream and I as minister for Human Resource Development, asked myself the question can I provide a tablet to the students throughout the country that costs a reasonable amount so that all children can afford it and yet is able to deliver through the best technology, the vast information available on the net to them sitting wherever they are," he further added.
Sibal had announced in June that 100,000 upgraded Akash-2 tablets will be given to engineering colleges, for which deliveries were expected to begin in July.

Corsair has announced the acquisition of certain assets of Raptor Gaming.  As part of this transaction, Corsair receives Raptor Gaming's full product portfolio of keyboards, mice, headsets, and accessories, which will form a new series of gaming products alongside Corsair's existing line of Vengeance PC gaming products. Raptor Gaming executives CEO Dirk Schunk and COO Heinz-Dieter Ludwig will remain engaged with Corsair to facilitate a smooth transition.
