Kaspersky Lab Perceived as best anti-malware Brand for Business

According to the Global IT Security Risks Survey, conducted by B2B International for Kaspersky Lab, the Kaspersky Lab brand has outstripped its rivals     for the second year running. 16% of senior IT professionals from companies all around the world rate Kaspersky Lab as the top anti-malware brand, a higher percentage than for any of our competitors.

Kaspersky Lab is in fourth place for brand awareness among global IT security vendors, but ranks second in terms of brand efficiency, according to B2B’s brand funnel analysis, weighted by country size. And companies who use Kaspersky Lab corporate products are more confident that they are protected against future IT threats, poling a confidence level 3% above the average.

More than 3,300 senior IT professionals from 22 countries took part in the Global IT Security Risks survey. The chosen experts from the July 2012 research play a key role in their firm’s IT security policy and also have a good understanding of general business needs. Researchers from B2B explored their views on the major IT security issues facing companies of all sizes and in all parts of the world.

McAfee Launches New Data Center Security Suites

McAfee has announced four new Data Center Security Suites to help secure servers and databases in the data center.  The suites offer a unique combination of whitelisting, blacklisting and virtualization technologies for protecting servers and virtual desktops. These solutions provide optimal security for servers and databases in physical, virtualized and cloud based data centers, with minimal impact on server resources which is a key demand for data centers.

Cloud: Despite challenges exciting years ahead

Despite the hiccups and challenges surrounding cloud adoption and BYOD policy in enterprises, the coming years are going to be exciting and keenly watched, observed experts here at the Nasscom Cloud and Mobility Summit 2012.
Research firm Gartner in its recent Hype Cycle report notes that the hype around cloud computing and misuse of the term by some providers create confusion in the market. The report also goes on to caution that if "cloudwashing" continues it could detract from the technology's many benefits.
Initiating a debate on 'Solutions to Security and Compliance Challenges in the Cloud' Kartik Shahani, Country Manager, India and SAARC, RSA pointed out that despite the benefits, the biggest challenge faced by enterprises when they think of moving to cloud is the security aspect.
There are several issues about compliance, manage data leakage or meeting regulatory requirements, he added.

Joining the discussion, Mark Goudie, Regional Manager, Investigative Response, Verizon Asia -Pacific, said that Data classification is the Number one thing enterprises need to do when moving to cloud.
He observed that enterprises lack a detailed security policy regarding access to enterprise data. Every business document needs to be classified to decide if it should go to cloud or not.
Agreeing with Goudie was Mahesh Gupta, VP, Business Development, Borderless Networks, CISCO, India & SAARC who added that enterprise needs to define policies with regard to providing access from employees' personal devices from different locations.
"Providing access to employees from wi-fi public hotspots ( to enterprise data) can be quite dangerous. So, networks should be context aware too," he stressed.
Pointing out at different security regulations in different countries and the challenges it brings before cloud adoption, Rahul Jain, Sr. Consultant, Security Practices, DSCI, said ''It is often viewed that laws do not scale up to developments in technology. But, law cannot always be perspective and challenges will come with its interpretation. Our policy makers need to interact more with the industry before bringing regulations,'' he said.

Now pro Pussy Riot punk band cyber attack in Russia


Russian computer hackers today attacked the website of the Moscow court that tried and convicted three members of the Pussy Riot punk band last week, RIA Novosti reports.

The Associated Press says the Russian offshoot of the loose-knit movement known as Anonymous first tweeted news that the website of Khamovniki District Court was down.
The hackers posted a message calling for the release of the three members of the punk band who were sentenced to two years in prison on charges of "hooliganism" for mounting a protest at Moscow's largest cathedral in February.
The protest included a profanity-laced song criticizing the Russian Orthodox church and Russian leader Vladimir Putin.
The hackers also posted a music video clip of what RIA Novosti calls "homosexual content" by a Bulgarian pop-folk singer.
In addition, the AP reports, search engines' cached pages show that the hackers posted Pussy Riot's latest song ridiculing Putin

Java 7 Under Attack: Researchers Advise It Be Disabled During The Interim

Security researchers are urging channel partners and administrators to limit use of Java 7 while they work to resolve a new zero-day exploit in Java 7, which was discovered in targeted attacks on Sunday from a site hosted in China.

So far, the vulnerability has been leveraged via Internet Explorer, Chrome and Firefox, and the attackers have reportedly been installing a dropper (Dropper.MsPMs), as well as a piece of malware known as Poison Ivy RAT, or a version thereof.

"IT administrators' only defense at the moment is to limit the use to Java," wrote Wolfgang Kandek, CTO of Qualys, in a posted blog. "This can be implemented by uninstalling Java where not needed or by using the Zone mechanism in Internet Explorer, forbidding Java use in the Internet Zone (setting Registry Key 1C00 to 0 in Zone 3) and allowing it only on white-listed websites in the Trusted Zone."

Kandek also added that, “for once, users of the older Java v6 do seem to be better off as the vulnerability does not affect that version [or earlier versions] of Java.”

Meanwhile, Andre M. DiMino and Mila Parkour of DeepEnd Research report that although the number of attacks up until now has been relatively low, the volume is expected to escalate "due to the fact that this is a fast and reliable exploit that can be used in drive-by attacks and all kinds of links in emails."

In addition, Java is generally considered to be one of the most widely deployed applications, thereby making this exploit particularly inviting to those who might choose to leverage it.

The bloggers also point out that Oracle (NSDQ:ORCL)'s scheduled quarterly patch cycle suggests that a fix might not be available till October unless an emergency patch is issued, though their firm has apparently developed a third-party patch that is available by request. DiMino and Parkour are also echoing the recommendation to disable Java 7 until the situation is resolved.


According to an analysis posted by Michael Schierl, a German developer widely renowned for his expertise in Java vulnerabilities, the malicious code utilizes a somewhat unique approach.

"A Statement is created that disables the security manager (by default with permissions of the untrusted code)," he writes. "But before calling the statement, the permissions stored in that field we just got access to are overwritten with permissions that allow running all code, and the statement can be called now and disable the security manager for us. At this point, no security manager is left, and the applet can do anything Java can.

"What makes the code a bit more complex is the fact, that the bytecode verifier also tries to verify if you are accessing restricted packages, therefore all access to restricted packages has to be done indirectly (that is also good for obfuscation, but here needed to make the exploit work, too)."

Using VMworld 2012 as a backdrop, Kaspersky Lab has rolled out strategy details for a new agentless security offering that will be part of the VMware Ready for Networking and Security Program. The new upgrade will be integrated into the Kaspersky Security for Virtualization solution, and it will leverage intrusion detection and prevention technologies to defend virtual machines from network attacks.

Using VMworld 2012 as a backdrop, Kaspersky Lab has rolled out strategy details for a new agentless security offering that will be part of the VMware Ready for Networking and Security Program. The new upgrade will be integrated into the Kaspersky Security for Virtualization solution, and it will leverage intrusion detection and prevention technologies to defend virtual machines from network attacks.

The forthcoming rollout will be able to be used in conjunction with the company's agentless security solution for VMware vShield Endpoint, which was announced six months ago. The combined offering will be manageable from a single platform designed to establish straightforward deployment, automatic protection of new virtual machines, mapping of both logical and physical computing structures, automatic security updates, and similar security needs of virtual, physical and mobile environments.

The technology is being developed in conjunction with VMware in order to help ensure smooth integration and interoperation between the offerings of the two respective companies while providing the framework to endorse the combined value propositions as validated joint solutions.

"Our intention is to help customers activate virtualization at their own pace," said Mark Birmingham, director of product marketing at Kaspersky. "This will provide a very solid foundation, particularly for the small to medium business segments that have often struggled with the complexity around virtualization."

All network traffic scanning is off-loaded to a single anti-malware signature database and anti-malware scanning engine, ensuring organizations reap the maximum resource efficiency from their virtual network.

"The primary differentiator would be management for virtual, physical, and mobile environments from a single pane of glass," explained Nancy Reynolds, senior vice president of corporate sales at Kaspersky. "But, the channel and the customers will also appreciate the light resource footprint."

The company points to a huge opportunity for channel partners to serve their customers through the Kaspersky product lines. "We have data that suggests that as much as 53 percent of businesses in the United States are not securing their virtual infrastructure," said Birmingham. "We are amazed by that."

Meanwhile, the Russian-based company continues to work on brand recognition. According to Birmingham, Kaspersky has higher brand recognition in Moscow than Microsoft (NSDQ:MSFT), and while the name is widely known among information security-savvy people all over the globe, brand awareness among end-users in the United States only ranges between 48 percent and 52 percent. According to the same survey, 27 percent of the respondents believe that the security risks in a virtual environment are lower or significantly lower than those for physical infrastructure.

"Geeks love us!" chuckled Birmingham. "Once we are installed, we are usually never taken out."

The solution is currently being demoed at VMworld in San Francisco this week. Product availability and pricing has not been finalized, though the company expects to announce general availability during March or April of next year.

Unisys Rolls Out Updated Private Cloud Solution


Unisys (NYSE:UIS) has rolled out a new release of its "Secure Private Cloud Solution."

Version 2.2, which was announced this week at VMworld 2012 in San Francisco, adds additional software designed to automate and simplify security implementation while provisioning virtual resources in the cloud. This enhancement supports creation of an integrated security infrastructure for each virtual machine provisioned through the Secure Private Cloud Solution.

The capability leverages the Unisys Stealth Solution for Network cybersecurity software. For circumstances in which data requires extensive protection, establishing a Stealth environment makes the infrastructure accessible only to people who are assigned to that community of interest. Outsiders are ostensibly unable to access the virtual machine, or even able to see that it exists.

"The Stealth solution was first offered as a productized offering through the channel in May of this year," said John Stubbs, director of software channels at Unisys. "One of the components of Stealth is what we called 'communities of interest.' And, if you're not part of that community of interest, you're not even allowed to see the users, the clients or the virtualized servers. We encrypt the data in motion using AES-256 encryption, and we also shred the bits. And then, we are leveraging roles and responsibilities inside of things like LDAP, RADIUS and Active Directory. So, through the use of the automated tools, we know the communities of interest, we know the endpoints, we know the users and we know the servers. By belonging to the same community of interest, they receive unprecedented levels of protection."
 
The functions are carried out between the network layer and the link layer, thereby enhancing security by keeping the activities between layers two and three in the OSI model.

In addition to enhanced security, Unisys Secure Private Cloud Solution release 2.2 delivers organizations another key benefit of multitenancy in the cloud: the capability to increase the number of communities sharing the same cloud, leading to increased efficiency in infrastructure utilization and improved economies of scale.

"This is a huge benefit in colo environments where you have multiple tenants in the same environment, and you need to keep those tenants and their respective data and servers separate while sharing the same infrastructure," explained John Keller, cloud product manager at Unisys. "You can have two very similar companies with very important data sitting on the same server, running two different virtual machines on that same physical machine. Company A has no knowledge of Company B and has no access to their resources. Each would have their own respective community of interest."

Google under CCI scrutiny over anti-competitive practices in India


The search giant Google is reportedly under close scrutiny of Competition Commission of India (CCI). If reports are to be believed, CCI has asked its investigation arm to explore the alleged discriminatory practices by Google.
 
According to latest update, Minister of State for Corporate Affairs, R P N Singh has announced that the Competition Commission of India has received information for contravention of section 4 of the Competition Act, 2002, by Google. As a matter of concern, it is found, the section 4 of the Competition Act pertains to the abuse of dominant position by a market player.

Presently, Google has a 97 percent share of the Indian search market.

A spokesperson from Google has stated that the company is completely cooperating with the CCI and it is confident that Google’s product and services are compliant with competition law in India.

It is important to note that Google has branched out into numerous businesses including online mapping, shopping, and travel. Along with these businesses, Google is also one of the dominating players in operating system segment. Google’s Android operating system for mobile phones and tablet computers has been used by numerous handset and tablet makers since its launch.

Honeywell Intensifies Cyber Security Solution Offerings


Honeywell has announced a fully certified application control and whitelisting solution to help combat viruses and malware from attacking its Experion Process Knowledge System (PKS) control system platform.  Whitelisting is an important tool in Honeywell’s evolving cyber security arsenal that protects from unwanted intrusions by permitting only applications and executable files that are considered safe and on an “approved list” to run, while blocking everything else.
