Despite economic uncertainty and costs being volatile and unpredictable, consumers continued to be demanding for PCs. According to a latest update, PC shipments in the country increased by over 15 percent to 2.86 million units for the quarter ended June 30 2012 against the same period last year.
It is reportedly said that the latest results showed a sequential gain of 8.6 percent over the previous quarter, while the year-on-year growth is at 15.7 percent.
According to a senior analyst, fulfillment of the ELCOT project in Tamil Nadu for a second successive quarter has helped the PC market growth to a large extent.
To rewind: the state-run Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu (Elcot) had issued a tender for seeking rate contract for over nine lakh laptops to be supplied to students in January this year. Lenovo bagged a major portion of the deal along with other companies like Acer and HCL Infosystems.
As far as the pc makers are concerned, Lenovo sustained its leading position with a 17.1 percent market share in Q2 2012, followed by HP to take the second place with a 13.7 percent market share.
It is expected that PC sales will remain strong for the July-September quarter.
