Worldwide smartphone users cross 1 billion benchmark

Smartphones with their advanced computing ability and connectivity have become the indispensable part of life. According to a latest report generated by a US research and consulting firm, the number of smartphone users have topped one billion in the third quarter of 2012.

Analyzing the report, it has been revealed that there were 708 million smartphones in use worldwide by the third quarter of 2011. After a year of increasing demand, the number of smartphones in use worldwide, has reached 1,038 billion units. It is expected that the number of users will be doubled to two billion in less than three years.

The report further revealed, one out of every seven people worldwide carrying one of the smart devices.

As a matter of concern, it is found; the first ever smartphone was the Nokia Communicator, which came out in 1996. However, demand for the smartphones exploded after the launch of Apple's remarkable iPhone in 2007. Apple’s iPhone has really revolutionized the smartphone industry. 

Industry experts added, most of the people worldwide still do not have smartphones, so there is a huge scope for future growth, specifically in emerging markets such as India, China and Africa.
