If all goes well, India is set to push for formulating internet focused regulation and governance policies at the level of United Nations, paving the way to better manage and monitor the social media segment

India Looks to Regulate Internet at UN Level

This move by India comes at a time when the country is looking at placing policies and norms that can streamline the social media brigade. And hence, regulating Internet at the UN level, would mean that control of social media organizations such as Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn etc would finally rest in the hands of United Nations, and its member nations such as India and China.

India has said its statement at UN that its proposal should not be viewed as an attempt by governments to "take over" or "regulate and circumscribe" the internet. The move is purely directed towards better internet governance as most of the social media content moves in an unrestricted manner and has no governance policies to distinguish between regular content and the content that is sensitive in nature.

It may be recalled that India has been pushing for global internet governance at the level of UN, which has been critized by some countries and advocacy groups as well. And in the month of July, 2012, UN Human Rights Council in Geneva passed its first resolution on Internet freedom with a call for all nations to support individual and online human rights, this despite opposition by India & China, as both the Asian nations want a UN backed internet governance policy.

And as we move ahead, internet based social media focused organizations are likely to get a United Nations tab which will enhance the present infrastructure of internet responsibility.
