Winners of the 2nd 'Intel - DST Asia Pacific Challenge for 2012' announced

Teams from India, Indonesia and Philippines have won the coveted Intel- DST Asia Pacific Challenge for 2012 for their innovative projects. The Indian team led by Dr. Debraj Shome and  Dr. Arbinder Singal won the first prize for its project on MediAngels, which is the world’s first online hospital. The Indonesia and Philippines teams shared the second prize. Muhammad Endri Infanie and  Rizky Ario Nugroho of Indonesia won the second prize for their project ISARA, a sign language learning application. The Philippines team lead by Danielie Marie Chan Lo & Jam Lewis Pacana Penas won the second prize for their project Robolex, a robotic leg exoskeleton rehabilitation device.

Intel- DST Asia Pacific Challenge 2012 is a unique initiative in the area of technology innovation to recognize outstanding ideas by technology startups that addresses social issues across 12 Asia-Pacific countries. The Intel-DST Asia Pacific Challenge is designed for individual innovators and technology startups, organized by APIN in collaboration with Intel and the Department of Science and Technology (Government of India), across 12 countries in the Asia-Pacific region. This initiative aims to showcase excellence in technology innovation and entrepreneurship under the themes of education, healthcare, energy, environment, employability and technology for the masses.

The event featured innovations in the technology space serving as a window to the future of business with path breaking ideas and concepts from across the Asia-Pacific region. It also brought together more than 25 imminent Venture Capitalists to judge the innovators and technology startups at the event. The APAC finishing school was a 2 day intervention that witnessed UC Berkeley, National University of Singapore and IIMB mentoring the 24 finalists for the Finals of the ‘Intel DST APAC Challenge’12’.

Ashutosh Chadha, Director-Corporate Affairs, Intel South Asia stated that they believe that advancement in technology is the real driver for economic and social development. With this initiative, Intel seeks to provide a platform to promote and accelerate innovation and entrepreneurship among the technology start-ups in the Asia Pacific region. This platform provides them with requisite skill, visibility and network to accelerate their venture.

Mr. H.K. Mittal – Advisor & Member Secretary NSTEDB-DST, Government of India state that despite the number of rising startups, investors are finding it difficult to identify the appropriate opportunities. Organizations like Intel and APIN who share their expertise and help- in fostering the entrepreneurial spirit play a crucial role in the development of innovative technological skills among startups. This collaboration provides a platform for exchange of ideas, networking and business opportunities for innovators, entrepreneurs, corporate leaders, investors, international officials, policy makers and academia from over 12 countries.

The Intel DST APAC Challenge and its affiliate programs reached over 15000 technologies and over 6000 ventures. 24 finalists were selected to compete in the APAC Finals at ‘The Power of e – Asia Entrepreneurship Summit’, a platform to showcase innovations and the power of entrepreneurship. The event also featured 24 innovations in the technology space serving as a window to the future of business with path breaking ideas and concepts, hosted in an environment that promotes innovation- an ideal opportunity to meet, greet and share ideas from across the Asia Pacific region.

The Intel-DST 2012 grand winners split a total prize of US$15, 000 for their innovations. The grand winners will also be eligible for a direct entry to showcase their projects at "Intel Global Challenge at UC Berkeley", a premier world stage for technology entrepreneurship.
